We've had space sims aimed at flight simulator fans like Elite: Dangerous and the X series (and more power to them I'm glad they got games made for them), but accessible space sims aimed at those of us who want to fulfill our Han Solo/Cowboy Bebop fantasies just disappeared. This was the most tragically nearly-dead sub-genre - the accessible narrative-driven space sim, but Rebel Galaxy Outlaw is coming out early next year and is the first accessible space sim to come out since these games released 20 years ago. None of my friends know about space sims or they think of them as the very different games in the genre out now. My Dad introduced me to these classics because they came out before I was old enough to game, so these titles have always been more special to me due to that bond. I'm a huge fan of Free Space (and Privateer). (Who are admittedly a bit of a knockoff of Babylon 5's Shadows, in concept, though not in appearance or philosophy.) I still remember to this day, my first encounter with the Shivans. For all the love Wing Commander (now Star Citizen) gets, Freespace blew it out of the water as far as many people who play space sims are concerned. The story was atmospheric and compelling, the visual(for the time) and audio design was fantastic, the controls were fabulous, they had new features no one else had(capital ships worthy of the name, nebula that didn't disappoint, a flexible jump drive system), an incredibly flexible mission editor and campaign briefing, and tons more to bring to the table. They basically nailed it, in terms of being a real successor.įreespace itself, for me, remains the best space sim game around, 20 years after the original was released. Their current game, a spiritual successor to Descent(Which they also originally made.), Overload, was also just released on consoles too, as well as PC. Best thing you can do to make that happen is throw money at Revival Productions. Just a reminder on this, some of the guys who made Freespace are still making games, and have expressed interest in doing a spiritual successor to Freespace. /r/GamePhysics - Clips of game physics shining and glitchingĭesign based on /r/FlatBlue created by /u/creesch./r/gaming4gamers - middle ground between purely-for-fun and more serious subreddits./r/GamingLeaksAndRumours - Leaks and Rumors.Posting unmarked spoilers will result in removal and warning, and posting spoilers with malicious intent will result in a ban.
